Artist Biography

Jennifer has been interested in art all her life and has pursued various mediums but she feels most creative and stimulated when working with glass. She began exploring warm glass in 2001 when she enrolled in her first glass fusing class.  She immediately fell in love with the medium and took additional classes as often as she could. However, she felt she had to put her love of glass art on hold in order to make a living. In 2002, Jennifer decided to pursue a master’s degree in College Student Personnel at the University of Maryland in College Park. While in school, she continued to take the occasional glass class and was later introduced to the Washington Glass School

In 2005, after returning from Boston where she had taken an 18 month hiatus from school, she decided to complete her degree. At this time, she also decided to stop compromising her love of art and began taking steps to pursue art in a more formalized and professional manner. She reconnected with the Washington Glass School and became a committed teaching assistant. Jennifer is currently employed at the University of Maryland and spends her free time working with the Washington Glass School and working on her own projects as she continues to develop as a glass artist.

Artist Statement

In my ‘3 Square’ Series, I am interested in the interplay between the order of the grid and the disorder of the arrangement of color. Though I made a conscious decision to avoid a specific pattern, I notice upon further examination that certain colors cluster together. Color is important to this series as the variety of colors interact to create different moods for each piece. When viewed in natural light, the work changes with the brightness or darkness of the day.

Touch is another way to experience this series. Unfortunately, in most situations, experiencing artwork through touch is not allowed. I want you to feel free to touch my work as a way to experience it more fully. Even though every panel is heated at the same temperature, each color reacts differently to the heat causing some colors to flow and flatten and others to keep their original shape, adding to the richness of texture and enhancing the tactile nature of each piece.

I work with glass because of the vast range of color and texture, how it interacts with light and how I feel during the process. When I assemble my work, my mind and body enter a state of complete calm, where the world melts into the background and time stops. I feel a sense of excitement every time I place my work in the kiln and again when the work is removed. Though I have a mental image of how each piece will look after it is fired, I am constantly amazed by the final product.
